It’s a nice portrait of how creativity can give us strength and art can help the artist work through growing up. This is the kind of story many quiet, artistic children will appreciate and perhaps even be inspired by. I haven’t seen a lot of characters like Emmie before, and I found her refreshing. Swapping back and forth between the short chapters keeps the reader involved in the events. In the diary section, the illustrations are cute, particularly with their silly captions, while the comics have minimal backgrounds but plenty of color. Then one day, a note Emmie wrote to her crush - but never intended to deliver - gets misplaced, and Emmie has to deal with being noticed. That’s good for her art, bad for her shyness. Then we switch to comics for the story of Katie, an outgoing student with lots of friends.Įmmie has one best friend, Brianna, but since she’s in the gifted classes, Emmie spends lots of time alone. Going to school makes her nervous and uncomfortable. She’s not popular, not an outcast, just quiet, and she likes to draw. It combines the illustrated diary format with comics to contrast different approaches to middle school.Įmmie is a regular, everyday kid. Terri Libenson’s Invisible Emmie does something fun with the concept, though. There’s nothing wrong with kids reading them, but I don’t care for them being promoted as comics.

Holm, Invisible Emmie is a humorous and surprising debut graphic novel by Terri Libenson, creator of the internationally syndicated, Reuben Award-winning comic strip The Pajama Diaries. I bet anyone who would read it, would hope the same.As long-time readers know, I’m not a big fan of the illustrated diary book format. Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Jennifer L. I want to read it again, and I definitely wish there could be a sequel. These are reasons why it’s my favourite book. After reading this book, you’ll have hope, and some kind of feeling that I can’t even explain. The story is funny, creative, relatable, empathetic, shows readers important messages and certainly touches the heart. But that doesn’t matter when you consider all the qualities. The only thing I found wrong about it was the fact that we don’t get enough information about the time and setting. To conclude, Invisible Emmie is a terrific book. I know I can! But, I still think this book would be funny and entertaining for kids a little younger, or a little older. I would recommend this book especially for middle-schoolers (ages 11-14), because they can probably understand, and relate the most to certain things happening in the story. I’m not going to reveal the message now, you’ll have to find it out yourself. And at the end is where you start understanding the moral, which I think is important to anyone who reads this book. It was unexpected, creative and it was a happy ending. Now, I want to talk a little about the ending. I would call it a comedy, because the main character is pretty funny! Invisible Emmie will make you chuckle, if not, it’ll at least give you a little smile. The author doesn’t give readers many details on time or setting. The majority of the book takes place in Lakefront middle school in wintertime. The author made it easy to understand who they are, based on pictures, things they say, and the way Emmie describes them. They create more drama, comedy and each one of them gives the reader different emotions, such as anger, empathy, etc. I think all the main characters make the story a lot more interesting. There are more characters to the story, but they don’t have much importance.
And of course, there’s always that one idiot type character included. There’s also Brianna, Emmie’s best friend, and their crushes, Tyler Ross and Anthony Randall. Of course, Emmie (the main character), is introduced, as well as Katie. There aren’t too many characters that are mentioned in the story.
